First time visitors to the Nepalese capital Kathmandu could be forgiven for being overwhelmed by the choice of food on offer. There are local specialties and other Asian cuisines, and finding somewhere good is one of the great experiences of travelling. All tried and tested, these are my top recommendations for a feast or a snack in Kathmandu.
RUMDOODLES, Thamel
Located in busy Thamel this is the perfect place for international cuisine and some great live music. Decorated by footprints of those who have scaled Everest the restaurant is buzzing with climbers and trekkers with their own peak stories to tell. Here you will find signatures from Sir Edmund Hillary and Rheinhold Messner to name a few. It is said that as news of a summit success on Everest is announced the tables are laid in Rumdoodles. With reasonable prices and a great atmosphere this is an excellent venue to chill out in- and if you do ever summit Everest you can eat here for free.
GARDEN OF DREAMS, TrideviMargGarden of Dreams
An oasis in the middle of a chaotic city the Garden of Dreams has beautiful floral displays and tranquil paths to explore, and the Kaiser Restaurant is a lovely place to relax and pass the time of day with both local and international cuisine. The quality is very high.
HANKOOK SARANG RESTAURANT, Thamel
The ideal place to break off from shopping and grab some lunch in Thamel, this restaurant is very reasonably priced and serves Korean food. With a delightful outdoor serving area it has excellent service and a delicious menu.
DWARIKA’s HOTEL. Pashtupatinath
This beautiful hotel and restaurant is the place to go and celebrate. With an elegant poolside bar and a Nepali banqueting menu that is delicious and very high quality, Dwarika’s is a place to consider for a special celebration.
THIRD EYE, Thamel
A Kathmandu favourite which specialises in Nepali and Indian cuisine. There is indoor seating and a roof top terrace. Great food and reasonable prices, and some of the best naan bread in town.
And finally, one of the best and most unforgettable "restaurants" has to be the cooking tents set up by sherpas along the trails of the Himalayas. There is nothing quite like a hot meal after a hard days walk and a refreshing cup of Sherpa tea.
